Reading and Phonics in Early Years and Key Stage 1
We want to ensure that every single child in our school gets the very best support in learning to read and write.
Teaching synthetic phonics, in a systematic way, drives up standards in reading and writing. And the new Year 1 Phonics Screening Check emphasises the importance of phonics in ensuring every child becomes a successful reader.
Read Write Inc. Phonics is a comprehensive literacy programme designed to get all young children reading and writing quickly. Importantly, phonics is not taught in isolation.
- Initial and on-going assessment tracks every child’s progress
- Children are grouped by ability so they learn rapidly at the right level
- Partner work means every child participates in the whole lesson
- The special ‘three reads’ approach ensures every child gains accuracy, fluency and a good understanding of the text
Phonics sessions take place daily from Reception to Year 3 and pre-phonics is taught in Nursery. These sessions are taught in addition to daily English lessons.
