Maps, Vikings and Monster Traps in Year 5

This week year 5 have started their new topic ‘The struggle for England’. The children have really enjoyed learning about the different kingdoms within the country before they were united into one kingdom. As part of the introductory lessons, children were required to create a map showing the 5 different kingdoms. We have started to read our new class novel Viking Boy, a story about a young Viking boy named Gunnar and his journey to become a warrior. A highlight of the week was our Woodlands session, during which the children planned and built different traps to catch a monster (inspired by Beowulf), created runes bearing their initials and even practised their archery skills! Next week, we are looking forward to expanding our knowledge of the new topic and experimenting with new art skills following our muse Alexis Diaz.
