Volcanoes, Tsunamis and Warning Tales in Year 5

It has been another exciting and action-packed week in Year 5!

In Literacy, the children have been busy bringing their own warning tales to life. After drafting and editing their stories, they have worked hard to write up their final versions, using suspenseful vocabulary and dramatic descriptions to keep their readers on the edge of their seats! This has linked beautifully with our topic learning, where we have explored the warning signs of a volcanic eruption and discovered just how devastating these natural disasters can be for the people and communities living nearby. The children also became reporters for the day, learning how to write a newspaper article about a real volcanic eruption in Iceland and exploring the catastrophe in detail.

In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of column addition. The children have been practising how to line up numbers correctly and use the formal written method to solve increasingly challenging calculations. We have been really impressed with their perseverance and careful thinking!

Our Art lessons have also been full of drama! The children have started creating their final pieces, sketching powerful tsunami scenes using the techniques they have learnt. They then used oil pastels to add colour, movement and atmosphere, creating artwork that really captures the suspense and force of a tsunami.

We have also taken our learning outdoors this week! The children headed into the woods to work together to build pulleys, putting their problem-solving, teamwork and practical skills to the test. It was fantastic to see them experimenting, communicating their ideas and learning from one another.
